How does a shy kid transform into a story-teller earning 3 Emmy Awards, 3 Edward R. Murrow awards, nearly a dozen Emmy nominations and dozens of 1st Place Illinois Associated Press awards for everything from Best Documentary, Best Reporter to Best News Writer? I listen. We listen. And then we tell a story that matters.
It is not about the awards themselves, of course—but the fact that we are telling stories that touch people’s lives in a unique way.
After more than 20 years as a ratings leader anchoring and reporting in three newscasts a day, I decided it was time for a change. Long- form stories and projects enable us to explore new possibilities, to extend and challenge the tools we have for the craft we love.
My story started simply enough in high school after a local reporter in Oklahoma City produced a story about a Christian service project I was involved with. It centered on my role as a “buddy” to a nursing home patient with no family nearby. Watching the story come together, I was inspired to find a way to produce these kinds of stories myself some day.
I got my start in radio, then local news where I spent decades telling similar stories. My belief is that we must connect with the people in our world by highlighting the good all around us, and using our own gifts and talents to make our world a better place.
